April, what’s up with 80 degrees? edition
This edition of the Spoken Wrench is brought to you by the number 4. its April, and wow is it warm out today. 80 degrees and sunny. So four reasons to ride.
1. It’s fun. What better reason do you need?
2. You can take everything you need with you. Or you can get it when you get there.
3. It will soon be ice cream shop season. And the best way to get there is on your bike. Plus, no need to worry about parking!
4. It’s fun. See, so fun in fact, it has to be mentioned twice.
Lone Peak Packs
Are you looking for a better pack for your bike? How about one that’s made in the USA? Made in Salt Lake City, Utah, Lone peak’s been making bags since 1979. they’re functional, have huge reflective stripes, and we’re getting triangle bags and a variety of rack and seat packs in black. Yes they come in other colours, but no, we’re not getting them. If you’d like to order something in a colour, or a pack we’re not getting we’re super happy about that. We like their bags, and well, really like that they’re made here.
Continental Casual Bike Ride
Apologies. Last time, Randy said the ride was going to start yesterday… and no, not so much. We’re on for the last Wednesday in April, the 28th, you know, so long as the weather cooperates. If it snows, or there’s some sort of monsoon, consider it off. We’re aiming to leave promptly at 6:30PM. Randy’s leading, and he’ll be riding in jeans and a t-shirt, so that should give you a good idea of the pace of the ride, you know eat, drink, ride some more, and generally be merry. If you have any questions, drop him an email randy@continentalbikeshop.com or call the shop.
Improve YOUR Riding Conditions
May 26th is Lucinda Means Advocacy Day. This year, they’re doing things a little differently. Previously the League of Michigan Bicyclists, Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance and Michigan Mountain Biking Association have held their own lobbying day, but this year all three groups will be asking legislators to support laws and policies to make Michigan more bicycle-friendly.
The day begins with a traditional bike rally from MSU to the capitol, and then there’s lots more to do. Registration is $10, and you can register and get more info at http://www.lmb.org/index.php/Events/2010-advocacy-day.html.
The tentative schedule looks like this so far:
8:30 am – Bike rally leaves from MSU Bikes to State Capitol
9:15 am – Opening session
10:15 am – Mettings with Representatives and Senators
1:00 pm – Lunch on Capitol grounds
2:00 pm – Group photo on Capitol steps
2:30 pm – Lansing by bicycle tour
Road Bike Screamin’ Deals!
If you’re looking for a road bike, now’s the time to get one. Cannondale and giant have lots of 2009s left in stock, some of them are avalible in full size runs in one of the colours. Cannondale has the 2009 Six-5, in silver, in a full size run. They were $1800, they’re now $1400. I think I might need a new road bike…
Bianchi Infinito wins Cycling Plus Bike of the Year!
No. I had no idea what Cycling Plus was when I started. Apparently its Britain’s best selling road bike mag. Good to know. But the review that the Infinito gets in Road Bike Action is of way more help. Its a full carbon frame and fork, with an Ultergra kit (the wheels are Fulcrum 7 and the cassette is 105). but what they liked best was that the bike rides great on distances and still feels stable enough when you stand up to take some fast corners and push your riding experience a little. So, Congrats to Bianchi. All that racer heritage is definitely good for something.
Repairs and a Broken Record
Why a broken record, you might ask? Man do I hate talking about repairs, pretty much every month. So its 80 today. And while right now repairs are 3 days out, that’s not going to last. So get your bike in, and get it done. So you can keep riding.
Michigan Complete the Streets Coalition
Continental Bike Shop recently joined the Michigan Complete the Streets Coalition.
Its a diverse group of individuals and organizations is working to implement complete streets policies across the state to insure that our roadways accommodate all users of all ages and abilities including pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users and those with disabilities, in addition to automobiles.
The streets of our cities and towns are an important part of the livability of our communities. They ought to be for everyone, whether young or old, motorist or bicyclist, walker or wheelchair user, bus rider or shopkeeper. But too many of our streets are designed only for speeding cars, or worse, creeping traffic jams.
Communities across Michigan are demanding Complete Streets. States, cities and towns across the nation are asking their planners and engineers to build road networks that are safer, more livable, and welcoming to everyone

Hines Drive Petition Signatures Needed!
If you have every ridden your bike down Hines Drive and are tired of all the debris on the shoulders, then listen up. There is a petition to get Wayne county to sweep it every two weeks as they previously pledged or let the local non-motorized clubs take this task over from the county.
Next time you in the store, think about signing it.
