Continental Bike Shop presents the Spoken Wrench vol6 no1
February, Winter Wont Last Forever, Edition

This edition of the Spoken Wrench is brought to you by the number 10. Its 2010 people. The last or first year of the decade, depending on how you choose to count. I’m going to go with last. Since when I count, its 1-10, not 0-9. But that’s neither here nor there. Its a new year, and relatively soon, depending on whether you believe Punxsutawney Phil or not, it will be spring.

Repairs Now I Say!
Someday, I will get tired of telling everyone that the best time to bring your repairs in is while its cold and no one is thinking about biking. For two reasons. First, you get to be the coolest kid on the block and be ready to ride the first time the temperature hits 50. (Wouldn’t it have been great to be able to ride a nice, well tuned bike when it was 50 last week?) Second, you don’t have to wait three days to a week like the normal turn around time is the first couple weeks its warm. Everyone wants to ride when spring comes in force. Why miss out? Also, as I said last time (because its better than ‘I told you so’ come April): Now is the time to get your bike in for service! NOW not April 1st!

And to make that a little more appealing, and easier… Tune up-Drive Train Cleans that usually run $150 are $100! Now through February 13th! Get your bike in now and get ready for the spring! Airing your tires on the first warm dry day is far better than finding out something catastrophic needs to be fixed.

Advanced Repair Classes, Anyone?
No, not just anyone. Anyone who has taken the Basic Repair Class and would like to delve even deeper into the workings of your bike. Last time, it was a tune-up, this time its a drive train clean. If you’re interested, email Randy at bicycledoctor@continentalbikeshop.com. Classes will run beginning at the end of February into March.

New Helmets from Monza!
Not all helmets are created equal. And we’re pretty picky about the ones we wear. So we’ve picked up a new line of bike helmets, Monza. They’ve got stylish helmets, with good adjustability, and mesh in the front vents to keep all manner of flying things out of your helmet. They should be here some time at the end of this week. If you’ve been putting off getting a new helmet, now might be the right time to try something new. And keep the bugs out.

New Torkers!
Bikes should make sense. And a lot of them do, Especially the new Torker Graduate. With a front drum brake, a 5 speed Sturmey Archer internally geared hub, rack and fender mounts, and a price that’s even nicer, at $499, its a lot of bike for a lot of riders.

Kissing cousins to the Graduate, is the Torker U-District. At $349, its a smart well built single speed that doesn’t scream ‘Steal Me!’ Its not about the flash, its about the quality of the ride on a sturdy yet supple steel frame.

Save on 2009 Bikes!
2009 was not a banner year in the bike industry. And while that’s neither good, nor news worthy, this is: there are a fair number of 2009 bikes available from the manufacturers. Those bikes are as we call them, ‘new old stock’. Brand new, never ridden, never left the factory, and yet, on sale. We’ve got some 2009s left in stock, and so do our bike manufactures, so come on in and see what can be had for a deal!

Coming this Spring!
We’ve been trying to get a ride from the shop started for a while now, and we’ve finally got the plans together. We’ll be starting the Conti Casual Ride come spring. It will leave from the shop, and we’ll ride into Detroit at a leisurely pace, find a place to eat and drink while we’re there before heading back to the shop. It will be a ride designed for new riders, commuters, and anyone who wants to kick back and relax while they rider.

National Bike Summit
Randy will be in DC for the National Bike Summit from March 7th through the 11th doing his legislatively duty and trying to convince congress that its time to make bikes a viable option for transportation in the US. He’ll come back with lots of info on what’s going on. But before that, find out who your Congressional representatives are at http://capwiz.com/lab/home/ and tell them that bikes are important!
